What is erectile dysfunction?
True-blue erectile dysfunction is when you regularly experience trouble getting or maintaining an erection. You need to learn a few different things about authentic erectile dysfunction.
The first is that it is either a lifelong or acquired issue.
Lifelong erectile dysfunction means that you've always had issues with erections. Whether it's getting a hard-on or keeping it, it's been an issue for as long as you can remember.
The second, acquired, means that you've had "successful" erections in the past, but you're now facing issues.
Both of these can have organic or inorganic issues that create your symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
Organic causes of erectile dysfunction include low testosterone, blood disorders, and similar concerns.
Inorganic is a bit of a misnomer. It includes the much more common issues causing your erectile dysfunction. Inorganic causes are plentiful and can include:
Having too much to drink or eat (or forms drugs)
Psychological concerns such as anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues
Intimidation or conflict with your sexual partner
Fear of failure to experience an erection
Fears and anxieties surrounding your size and ability to please a partner with your penis
Previous experiences with erectile issues
The list could go on and on.
There is no shortage of what can impact your ability to get and stay rock hard.
But, most of them aren't really your fault. Your mind is your most powerful sex organ. If anything is weighing on your mind, it will likely manifest is in your sexual response system.
It happens to every guy.
Just sparring with the reference from Friends here. I completely understand and respect that not everyone with a penis understands their gender as man or male.
I'm just using the terms "man" and its accompaniments for the sake of brevity.
But the reality is that it happens to every guy at some point. And we need to normalize that. Let's dispel some common stereotypes about erections. That way, you can take a breather and start being nice to yourself and your penis for once.
Myth: Your erection abilities and strength are proportional to your attraction to your partner.
Truth: Your erection strength or ability to keep one does not mean anything about your attraction to your partner.
Your erection does not directly correlate to your sexual interest. There, I've said it. Romance novels, porn, and years of casual jokes about erections have caused a lot of harmful ideas. An erection just means that there is something your brain and body deem as sexually relevant. And it is only sexually relevant if your brain and body do not perceive any threat in the area. Your ancestor's gift of fight-or-flight is still in your body. Many things can be perceived as a danger to you. A casual laugh, performance pressure, or anything similar may be deemed as hazardous to your well-being. Therefore, you won't be getting an erection until you feel safe.
Myth: You should always be able to get a rock-hard boner on command.
Truth: Erection ability and strength change every day.
As men age, the amount of testosterone decreases.
It's simple physiology.
What you need for erections is something called free testosterone.
It allows you to get an erection and be a sexual being.
As you age, the amount of free testosterone starts to dip after your 20s.
No, there's nothing wrong with you.
No, you don't need testosterone supplements.
You just need to change up the stimulation you're getting.
Myth: Popping some Viagra isn't a big deal.
Truth: Popping some Viagra is a big deal.
Many erectile dysfunction medications are readily available without a prescription. It's a big deal for a few reasons:
You don't have a prescription or doctor's input. If you're taking other medications, such as blood thinners, you can have a very unsafe drop in blood pressure.
You can develop a tolerance and thus dependence on them. Once you've started taking and relying on supplements, your body depends on them. It's like if you always ride a bike with training wheels, then you suddenly take them off. You'll wobble and fall, and you're not used to the lack of support. The same thing goes for your erections. If your body learns that it'll get a pharmaceutical stint, you'll become dependent on the drug.
They don't work for everyone - the active component in erection medications doesn't work for every guy. About ⅓ of men aren't sensitive to it in the first place. So don't waste your money on something you don't know will work.
So if you're still considering stopping by your local black market pharmacist, I hope I've discouraged you. Don't worry. I've got tons of other fixes for you.
Effective at-home erection remedies
If you've any health issues that impact your circulatory or cardiovascular system, speak with a doctor.
These simple ways should work for the vast majority of men.
Erection remedy #1: cock rings
Yes, cock rings are plentiful, affordable, and abundant.
But what do they do?
Essentially, you put a cock ring on to help trap the blood in the shaft of your penis.
Not only do they help you maintain an erection for much longer, but they also make your penis appear and feel much larger. Many penis-owners report that these rubber miracles help delay ejaculation. They're also said to help increase the strength of your orgasm.
Seems like a win across the board, right?
There are a few downsides:
You're not in a good place if you get the wrong size. If you feel any numbness, tingling, or pain while using a cock ring, remove it immediately.
Cock rings shouldn't be worn for long. The rule of thumb is about thirty minutes. Because they're constricting one of your appendages, it can cause nerve damage if you wear it for too long. That being said, I've heard of people wearing them for much longer. But, professionally and personally, I don't recommend it.
Some men report higher sensitivity while wearing these, which means you may not "last" as long as you want. If that's the case, pair it with a condom to help reduce sensations.
If you're having difficulties getting an erection in the first place, these likely won't help much. These are better suited for those who have challenges with maintaining an erection.
When purchasing cock rings, I always suggest going with a pack of varying sizes. That way, you can see which size works best for you. They're usually under $20 and reusable. To improve your partner's experience, go with a vibrating cock ring.
Erection remedy #2: penis pumps
Yes, penis pumps actually help you with erections. They're made up of a few essential components, and most are essentially the same.
A penis pump consists of:
A vacuum tube that goes around your penis
A silicone or rubber base at the end of the tube
Some type of tube connecting the penis pump to the pumping mechanism
The pumping mechanism (usually handheld)
To use them, please trim your pubes first. Vacuums can be rather painful with sensitive hair like pubes.
1 - Put a cock ring around the base of the penis tube for easy application.
2 - Then, put some water-based lubricant around the silicone base of the penis tube.
3 - Insert your penis into the tube and try to suck the penis tube against your body. Gently and slowly squeeze the pressure ball to secure a fit.
4 - Once you're nice and comfortable, gently pump the penis pump. Slowly and deliberately.
You should be able to experience an erection in a few minutes.
5 - Once you've reached your desired level of hardness, gently and carefully slide the cock ring onto the base of your penis. This retains the blood into the penis and can prolong your newly experienced erection.
Penis pumps are also like a gym for your penis.
Using them regularly can help increase your penis' potential for retaining and getting erections.
If you're using a penis pump for the long haul, repeat the use of the penis pump as per instructed. Just subtract the cock ring and allow your erection to go down while still in the tube. Then, gently pump it up again. Repeat a few times and continue using the penis pump regularly for increased penis strength.
Also, no, they will not make your penis larger permanently in any way. Just let go of that idea. Your penis is the right size. You already have a perfect package.
Erection remedy #3: exercise and a healthy lifestyle
Yup, the dreaded "e" word.
Cardiovascular health, blood circulation, and erection strength are directly linked. Therefore, if you take care of your body and exercise, you'll experience fewer issues with erections.
It's basic math. While it's annoying to hear constantly, the best way to treat erection issues is to take better care of yourself.
A few particular areas to focus on are:
Pay attention to Omega 3s and 6s - You can get what you need from some basic supplements, a diet rich in olive oil, and fish.
Get walking! Running is obviously great too, but regular exercise can help with erections in a few ways:
It increases blood flow in your entire body, making erections easier.
Your improved cardiovascular capacity can significantly improve your "performance" in bed.
It can increase your feelings of self-trust and body confidence if you stick to healthy habits regularly.
It can help increase your production of endorphins, improve your mood and lessen the impact of any mental distress.
Eat more fruit - For obvious reasons, too. But, also regular consumption of fruit can make your *ahem* spunk *ahem* taste much better.
It can help improve the quality of your sleep - Not everyone can get the recommended amount of sleep each night. But, having better quality sleep can help your body take care of more things when you sleep.
The best long-term fix for erection-related worries is a healthy lifestyle. Still, I can already sense you're resistant to the idea. At least I tried!
Erection remedy #4: take care of your mental health
The single most common cause of erectile dysfunction is psychological issues and distress. Find someone to talk to if you're fighting with your spouse, stressed about finances, or have unresolved trauma. Of course, I will say coaching and therapy are your best options for an erection remedy.
There are a lot of apparent reasons for this. When you pay someone to listen, you genuinely do not have to care how the other person is. You don't have to wait your turn to talk. You don't have to be considerate. You can forgo social norms and be yourself.
Also, you get an outsider's view on things. When we're wrapped up in our own world, sometimes the answers may not be obvious. To others, which can be objective, there are potential solutions you haven't come across yet.
So, give it a try with some sex coaching or even speaking with a counselor. Whatever suits you best.
*Special notes: Most licensed in the mental health field don't have extensive sex-sensitive training. If you're working specifically with erection issues, someone in the sexology field may be less judgmental. They also have more situation-specific advice. Please remember that mental health professionals are not created equal. Please interview potential therapists, counselors, etc., before choosing "your" professional. Having the right fit here is crucial.
Erection remedy #5: self-care & hobbies
The way you treat yourself matters way more than you think. You'll immediately see changes when you prioritize yourself and your mental care.
In coaching, I've found that most men struggle with a sense of self-worth based on masculinity complexes. While I'd love to help dismantle the patriarchy, there's one single important lesson I want to touch on here.
You don't trust yourself.
After all, why would you?
You promise yourself you'll wake up early and go for that walk three times a week, but you don't do it.
You promise you'll stop watching so many TikToks and clean the house. But you don't.
You stop showing up for yourself across the board. And thus, you are subconsciously teaching yourself that you're not trustworthy.
After all, if you had a friend that constantly bailed on you, you probably would stop being friends with them.
So why don't you do the same for yourself.?
Hold your personal self to the same standard that you treat others, and you can start to trust yourself.
Once you have an increased feeling of self-trust, you'll have increased confidence and self-worth. This will, in turn, help your penis trust you more. That's right, I said it. Your penis doesn't trust you because you don't trust you.
So, how can you start showing up for yourself more?
Here are some ideas:
Set aside five minutes every morning to sit quietly, no phone, and drink your coffee. Do this regularly and make it a ritual. Over time, you'll appreciate your quality time with yourself more, building self- intimacy and trust.
Do what you say you're going to do. Set small goals, like waking up one minute earlier each day. Those minutes add up over time and will help you across the board.
Do things for yourself, like hobbies. Hobbies are a fantastic way to start fostering your self-worth and improving your connection to yourself. Think of an active hobby, like photography, hiking, beekeeping, whatever floats your boat. Just do it and try to do it as consistently as you can.
Your psychological health and sense of self-worth underpin everything you do and how you treat others. So start prioritizing your penis by prioritizing yourself.
The erection take away
You matter. Your whole self impacts your penis directly. There are plenty of bandages that you can slap on to get you across that finish line. Still, the best way to improve your erectile issues is to start improving yourself.
If you still have difficulties with your erection, I'm here for you. Sex coaching is all about helping people with sexual challenges. Erectile dysfunction is one of the top complaints I get.
All it takes is a simple exploratory chat to find out more about you, and we can get things started.
